Incoming Green Lantern Suckquel
I have been reading a bit about the new Green Lantern sequel. Any fan of comics will tell you that the first one sucked. While I don’t pay attention things like writers and directors like Dave does it seems they are making a few positive changes and then a massive number of negative stay the sames.
The GL shirt I found in Dave’s DC comic t shirts, incidentally.
First off, they are apparently firing the director, Martin Campbell. Good move in my opinion. He really chocked it. However, they are keeping the same writers. How does that make sense? I mean, do they really think the writers from the first one did such a great job, or that they have some kind of connection to the Green Lantern story? If this was an original character they created that might be a good idea, but really the original creators all are the comic book writers. Get any lame hack in the world he he will have as much connection.
They say they are going to be relying less on CGI. Good move. There was way to much of it in all the wrong directions. But the biggest mistake they are going to make is they are keeping smarmy sleaze bucket Ryan Reynolds as the main guy. Is it remotely possible to hire someone who might take the part seriously and not smirk at the camera all day long? Maybe someone who understands comics. He wears a mask. He doesn’t have to be the biggest hearth throb in Hollywood. Get rid of him.

It’s comments like “Any fan of comics will tell you that the first one sucked” that cause this article to lose all credibility. I’ve been reading GL comics for 27 years and I love the film. So you better do a little more research before making such gross generalisations. Roll on GL2.

Hey Tonks. Jason and I just had a big argument about your comments. I agree that gross generalizations really should be kept out of posts like this. In my review of the movie I had issues with it on a lot of levels, but that was my opinion and I own that. I can see how another GL fan might very well appreciate the elements in the movie that were true to the comic. Jason tends to shoot from the hip more and doesn’t always proof everything before throwing it out there. On the other hand we need him to keep posting as getting stuff up is what this is all about. Also I don’t want to make this blog all about me and my opinion. He works across the room from me and we argue about stuff all the time. Thanks for reading, and for your comments. I promise when GL2 comes out I will review it with and unbiased opinion and be honest about the parts that I think are good, and those that I think are not so good.

Cheers for the feedback. To be honest it was this article that drew me to your blog. I was scanning for GL2 news and landed here. So I’ll be sure to check in from time to time to see what else you guys come up with. I REALLY hope GL2 goes ahead. I admit the first wasn’t perfect but I liked it for what it was. I think there’s so much groundwork that’s been done with the first that it would be criminal for WB to walk away from the franchise. They really just have to knock the next film outta the park. Lotsa space + lotsa Sinestro + Hal kicking arse = GOLD.

BTW, Martin Campbell wasn’t fired. He had the option to do the sequel but declined, as he’s done before on the Bond franchise. He stated early on, before release, that he would only do GL1. He’s not a fan of doing sequels.

I know I’m late to the party here, but I just wanted to say that, as a huge GL comic fan, I think the movie did a good job at marrying the origin story with a brand new story that could lead directly into the most popular GL story ever, the Sinestro Corps War. I think it was a gamble that they had to take, because starting from the beginning of Hal Jordan’s story and NOT leaping forward, would have provided a boring story for a long time.
This is why I’m hopeful for a sequel. The sequel would no longer have to marry the origin story to the new stuff. They could be much more true to the comics. I’m excited about it.

Interesting read. You make some valid points in your post with regards to GL canon. However, in the review I wrote canon wasn’t the major issue I had. The problem (for me) was bad casting and too much schtick. The one thing that get proven to us over and over again is that good comic book movies treat the stories seriously and don’t feel the need to cast some smarmy sleaze who can’t stop grinning at the camera. I thought Ryan Reynolds hammed it up so much he should be selling pork futures. They spent so much time with him and his Van Wilder version of Hal Jordan that we never really got the time I wanted with the rest of the GL Corps. They are super cool aliens. Why do we need to spend 15 minutes with Hal’s nephew’s birthday party and a bunch of other humans that add nothing to the story.
Jason is the one who really dumped on the incoming sequel, but I can’t say I don’t disagree. Only that I have more hope for something better.
